Text Analysis Info is a free information source for information that deals with the analysis of content of human communication, mostly but not limited to text. Several programs support the coding of different sources of human communication like audio, video, or chatroom files.


Call for papers

for the session on computer aided text analysis of the Research Committee 33 (Logic and Methdodology in Sociology) of the ISA (International Sociological Association). These papers can describe projects and/or results that use these techniques, or can discuss methodological problems of the field. Contributions from a academic and commercial are both welcome. An abstract up to 250 words is required, it must contain your name, your email address, your institutional affiliation and up to three keywords.

Deadline for the abstract: February 17, 2008

The conference takes place in Naples, Italy, from September 1-5, 2008, at the University "Federico II" on the campus Monte Sant'Angelo. Monday afternoon and Friday morning will be devoted to tutorials.

June, 18th, 2006 : The conference of the ICA (International Communication Association) takes places in Dresden, Germany, starting June, 19th, for 3 days. Social Science Consulting will demonstrate text analysis software like TextQuest, TextGrab, WordStat, and the new version of QDA-Miner.

May, 28th, 2006 : The sections QDA-software, audio/video and transcription were extended describing the ANVIL software of Michael Kipp, DFKI, Germany. The software is free and runs on different operating systems.

May, 23th, 2006 : Provalis Research released a new version of WordStat, the newest version now is 5.1.

March, 25th, 2006 : Phlip J. Stone, developer of the General/New Inquirer, died at the age of 69. The scientific community lost one of their pioneers in computer aided content analysis.

June, 30th, 2005 : Provalis Research, Montreal, Canada, released a new version of its text analysis software WordStat 5.0. It may be used for automatic categorisation of text using a dictionary approach or various text mining as well as for manual coding. May, 24th, 2005 : A new version of MAXqda2 is released. The free demo version is a complete version of MAXqda2 with a 30 day time limit; it includes the add-on module for content analysis, MAXdictio.
MAXqda2 provides 37 major & minor enhancements and improvements, including some new possibilities for visual analysis, e.g. the code-matrix-browser and the code-relations-browser.

February, 16th, 2005 : A comparison of SAS Text Miner and WordStat is published in The American Statistician 2005, vol. 59, no. 1, pp. 89-103:
"Both packages offer a variety of features that effectively help researchers run associations and present results. However, in extracting themes from unstructured data, both packages were only marginally helpful. The researcher still needs to read the data and make all the difficult decisions."
